Every inland species of freshwater fish in Texas can be found here at various spots. Carp, 3 species of Gar, Largemouth and Spotted Bass, Drum, Channel, Blue and Flathead cats, all the panfish species including Crappie, Longear and Redear Sunfish. Stick to bridges and flats for fly fishing and artificials, use live bait year round in open water or under cover. In December they stock trout between Bryant Irvin and Hulen for Fly Fest. Careful for garbage and snakes, plenty of both here.

Bowfishing

I recently went on a Bowfishing trip to Lake Whitney. The bowfishing was fantastic. We took gar, carp, and some buffalo. For two ‘first time’ bow fisherman, it was a ton of fun. In four hours we managed to hit 26 fish. Stripers! Lake Whitney is known for their stripers and on this Bowfishing trip we wandered into a marina at night. Our lights were attracting lots of shad and they were attracting stripers. In fact, we stopped bowfishing for around 15 minutes so we could watch the stripers (15 to 20 inches long) attacking the shad under our Bowfishing lights. The next day we limited out on striper in 2 hours If you want to try bowfishing, or striper fishing; then give lake Whitney a try.
