McAlpine IS a pay lake, but in exchange you get a lovely, peaceful location, rarely ever crowded, and trophy sized table ready fish eager to shake your rod. Grab your light or ultralight gear, pick up some OutKaster spoons at the office (shameless plug for my favorite spoons ever), or grab some worms and a worm float if that’s your game, and head on down. A net is a must, these big fish will bust your light line if you try to bank land them. Get there early enough and enjoy the sound of redwings singing as you watch the just risen sun skimming the mist on the water, with an occasional visiting eagle coming down for a breakfast snack. Re fly fishing, sure, if you’re good at roll casting. There aren’t too many spots with the room for a good back cast. SUPER handi-capable location, even the restrooms. *NO* catch and release. These fish aren’t small so that’s not a problem. Bring your best shiny charm, they stock lightning trout here too! Wishing you the best of luck.
This was a great place. I fished it for decades but now probably due to this app and other things The parking can be very difficult because there's very little And when I say very little I mean about seven spots that's it, so if you want to fish this place you better get there early there's no more than seven spots within walking distance and then after that you have to walk a good distance half a mile maybe. The fishing oh my God the fishing there are some giant bass in there I've been there when the sun's going down and they are slapping the top of the water holy cow brings chills to my spine 😁 no lie This is one of the better used to be hidden great spots around this area. Don't bother going to the opposite side of the reservoir just go right down to the dam and go to the right until you find your spot there's also spots you can park on the road farther down and walk down to the water and have the whole place to yourself well at least you used to. One last thing I have never been ripped off there but I know people who have and you can see glass from previous break-ins unfortunately you have to be careful of this.
