Fishing Water

In the last hour of sunset we probably caught well over 20 trout, most on the smaller side. They were nailing literally every single cast like their lives depended on it. That is some of the most fun fishing you can ever have when they are chewing like that.

Good day casting lures in the surf. Trout were feeding pretty heavily on the DOA shrimp which made for a lot of good fun. Biggest one of the day went 21” and got a couple more slots to go with it.

Pretty awesome evening in the surf yesterday. In the last hour of sunset we probably caught well over 20 trout, most on the smaller side. Then after sunset I caught a bunch of ribbonfish. Really awesome looking fish and they are quickly becoming one of my favorites.

First cast of the day I got a surprise ribbonfish. Lots of good fun casting lures in the surf. They would bite in waves of two or three. Squeezed out a limit of trout and sone ribbonfish to use for bait tomorrow.

Jacksonville Beach

Writing this in 2020. Pier was cut down to about a 3rd of its original size during a hurricane in 2016. Up until recently you could fish on the pier in surf but it was mediocre at best unless you were a very skilled fisherman. Pier is currently under a lengthy renovation to hopefully be restored back to its former glory. For now the surf fishing is extremely hit or miss. Certain times of year the sea trout fishing can be fantastic in the cuts that parallel the beach next to the pier and artificial lures and live shrimp will fill a cooler. Black drum and sheepshead stay abundant on the structure of the pier but can be a tough quarry from the beach unless you have fresh sand fleas. Redfish and tarpon are occasional visitors whereas whiting and flounder are the more permanent residents. Pompano run seasonally pretty thick but tend to also be picky in ways that are difficult to predict. Overall a great spot for the experienced fisherman but with the pier broken and closed their isn’t much room for large families or lots of fisherman.
