Private Anglers and State Licensed For-Hire Vessels: Each Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) state will set the private angling season for state and federal waters. The Mississippi private recreational regulations apply in state and federal waters off the state of Mississippi. State Licensed For-Hire Vessels may only fish in MS State Waters (out to 9 nm).
Federal For-Hire Vessels: The federal for-hire season opens June 1, 2026 - 12:01 a.m., local time, October 26, 2026. Anglers fishing from federally-permitted for-hire vessels in federal waters may retain 2 fish per person with a 16-inch minimum size limit. Bag limit for captain and crew on vessels operating as a charter or headboat is zero.
One angler per vessel, per trip is required to report through the MDMR Tails n' Scales system. As a reminder, Marine Patrol officers encountering anglers fishing for or possessing Red Snapper without a trip authorization number will result in fish confiscation and fines. All vessels (private and for-hire) landing Red Snapper in Mississippi must use TailsnScales.org electronic reporting system regardless of harvest area. There are no exemptions. Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) requires one report per trip per vessel. A trip authorization number must be obtained by a representative of each vessel prior to recreationally fishing for Red Snapper. Trip authorization numbers are only valid for 24 hours and must be closed out each time before a new trip number will be issued.
