A creek with opportunities

Left hand creek originates from left hand reservoir in the mountains and receives waters from James creek east of Jamestown. James creek originates from long lake and Brainard lake in the mountains. It merges into the St Vrain creek before merging with the south platte. Left hand creek has two major regions, the mountain region and transition region. The mountain region is more colder and receives snow melt, fish such as various trout like cold water. No bass or sunfish. In the transition region, water temperature gets warmer the farther east it goes. Trout can be found in areas near the mountains and front range, but the waters get warmer in the plains for more warm water fish like bass. Left hand creek doesn’t fully get warm enough out east before it merges with the St Vrain so sunfish and bass aren’t likely to be found unless the water is warm enough. The size of them however is expected to be small. Trout are small in left hand too. Species that are averagely found in the transition zones are exclusively brown trout and rainbow trout. You are however less likely to find rainbow. In the mountains brook trout may have a chance of being found but it’s not guaranteed. There is word that left hand used to have more brook trout in it however since several droughts and the flood, it’s unlikely that brook trout would be found again. There is no guarantee of finding brook trout given the conditions over the decade since the flood but it is not impossible that some reside in the transition zone. This is no gold medal stream so sizes are laughable. Regulations specifically to left hand are not well known but according to a law enforcement source it isn’t regulated strictly so state laws apply however treat it as a catch and release stream using artificial flies and lures. You can practice bait but there isn’t much worth keeping. Fish population is surprisingly consistent yet sensitive to weather so plan accordingly. Scenery is beautiful. Recommend for practice and fun.
