Maryland fishing blends freshwater lakes and rivers with Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic waters. Striped bass, trout, bass, and panfish thrive, making the state a versatile fishing destination for year-round anglers.
Fishing in Maryland requires a valid state fishing license for anglers. Options include resident, non-resident, daily, and annual licenses, purchasable online or at authorized vendors.
In Maryland, no fishing license is required for anglers under 16 or residents 65 and older. A few other exceptions worth knowing:
Free fishing days — most states designate 1–2 weekends a year where anyone can fish without a license
Tribal waters — tribal members fishing on tribal land operate under separate tribal regulations
Private ponds — landowners fishing their own water typically don't need a license
Non-residents usually pay more for a license than residents. Some species also require an extra stamp or endorsement on top of your base license.

The department asks anglers to remove and kill any blue catfish and flathead catfish you catch. Catch and release of these fish is discouraged, as they are invasive top predators and pose a serious long-term threat to our native species. In Maryland, it is illegal to transport live blue and flathead catfish into another body of water, anyone in violation of this can be fined up to $2,500.
