Big news: Fishbrain's Best Baits feature just leveled up. Same tool you trust, now with sharper picks to help you land more bites, faster.

Chartreuse and white used to be my go to colors for shad fishing. They worked every time, until one day they didn't. Maybe it was the pressure, or the cloud cover, or a seasonal shift, but I couldn't buy a bite with my go-to colors and couldn't figure out how to swap it up.
It was a lesson I learned the hard way, but you have to know when to swap your lures and when to give up on the ol' tried-and-true confidence lure.
That's why we revamped BestBaits. With thousands of lures to choose from and seemingly hundreds of conditions that can affect what a fish wants, we knew it was time to add more factors into choosing a lure.
Check out below to learn in more depth about how we recommend a bait and how many lure options you can find.
More lures than you can snag on a tree

BestBaits offers over 40 different types of lures and 10 different bait recommendations depending on your day's fishing conditions.
Sometimes fish can lock into specific colors and patterns, regardless of the right lure, and because of that, we also offer 30 color variations for the 40 lure types.
How is a lure suggested?

Eight different factors go into determining which lure is recommended.
Species Activity level Cloud cover Time of day Water vegetation Water depth Water clarity Wind speed
All of these factors are combined in real-time to help determine which lures will sit in the right position in the water column and are meant to be presented at the correct speed.
So you won't be getting any suggestions for poppers or spinners on a cold water day, or on a warm day when fish are holding deep.
Color coordination

The right color can be imperative to your success. Whether it's not being too visible, creating an enticing silhouette outline, or other factors, fish can be incredibly picky when it comes to color presentation, with some species, like trout, being even pickier than others.
Picking your color is all about available light and how to get your lure to interact with it. Four different factors go into color suggestions, and they all pertain to light.
Cloud cover time of day water depth water clarity

Cloud cover and time of day, obviously, dictate how much light is available and how diffused the light is through the sky, while water depth and clarity pertain more to how that light reflects on a fish's eyes and how it illuminates bait. You neither want your lure to be too visible nor too dark and hidden, and Fishbrain is the only app that calculates the important data and helps you make a decision.
You can't catch a fish if your line isn't in the water. Don't waste your time sifting through your tackle box, constantly tying on new lures. Check Best baits on Fishbrain and try tying on the right lure first every time.
