Crescent Shiner

This is the first species of my few days I will be spending on the Smith River in southern Virginia. The original plan was to do a ton of snorkelfishing for cool darters and jumprocks, but tropical storm debbie came through and dumped over 5 inches of rain in the area, causing the river to get high and muddy. Hopefully it will fix itself in the next couple days, but in the meantime I am forced to change my tactics. I ended up putting a tiny hook on with a small piece of soft plastic and a split shot a few inches above. I then would cast out into slackwater behind trees and stuff and fish along the edge of the current where some minnows could be waiting to feast. I ended up finding a large piling in the river from an old covered bridge that washed away in a flood in 2015. I cast behind it, and sure enough, a crescent shiner took the bait. These are nowhere near their beautiful spawning colors they have during spring, but it is still a new species with a sorta localized range that I am happy to catch
