Well that’s a weird looking snook. This was my skunk buster for the quick fishing session this afternoon. I did hook into a solid 30 inch snook that was pulling very hard for its size but it frayed off my 40lb leader after a long fight, I can’t win lately.

Oddly enough I caught 3 of these crazy looking spotted scorpionfish this afternoon. I caught the first two jigging my fluke along some structure. One of the scorpionfish spit up a small blue crab that I then rigged up to try and catch a sheepshead and ended up catching a third scorpionfish...figures.

One thing I’ve learned over the years targeting multiple different species of fish every time I go out is there is ALWAYS something around and biting even when all hope is lost and all the big fish aren’t around and won’t bite, you just gotta be creative and find them. I haven’t been skunked in months thanks to this attitude (yes small fish definitely count as skunk busters). That being said, for the 3rd day this week I haven’t found any or very few of my usual targets, sheepshead, snook, and jacks. So I decided I would not be defeated and thought that the graysby grouper I caught Monday was odd enough that maybe I should try fishing the cracks in rocks again until I locate the fish. Not only did I pick off yet another graysby grouper (different one, little smaller) on a Nikko shrimp lure, I also found another spotted scorpionfish that smashed my swimbait out of nowhere and picked up a few small schoolmaster snapper and a big checkered puffer...all in the same rock pile subtling fishing the cracks.

After numerous recommendations to try scorpionfish I decided to (very carefully) clean it and bring it home to try with my sheepshead from Monday for dinner. It had extremely white firm meat, might as well have been sea bass because it was good, even better than the sheepshead I dare say.

Oops I did it again, another spotted scorpionfish, and a very angry one at that. Such a cool fish regardless.

Pulled up a bonus catch, my first spotted scorpionfish (species 292) that I didn’t catch just once, but twice within 10 min of the first time it hit. I sight casted it the first time with a crab and then had it ambush a jig that I was using around the same area to try and find a snook. Such an awesome looking fish with beautiful colors.
