Eagle Lake rainbow trout are adapted to survive in the highly alkaline waters of Eagle Lake near Susanville (Lassen County), which is a designated Heritage and Wild Trout Water. They were first described by John O. Snyder in 1917 as a subspecies of rainbow trout and named aquilarum after the Latin word for eagle. Later examinations indicated Eagle Lake rainbow trout were hybridized versions of redband trout, rainbow trout, and/or Lahontan cutthroat trout.
