The sand smelt is a slender, elongated fish with a translucent, silvery body commonly found in coastal waters and estuaries of Europe and the Mediterranean. Typically measuring 4-8 inches and weighing only a few ounces, it is an active swimmer, often forming large schools. Its diet consists of plankton, small crustaceans, and other minute aquatic organisms.
