These fellas were as plentiful as the beers

I’ve spent a ton of time night microfishing in saltwater. Usually, I’m in tidepools, but occasionally, I’d put on waders and go out into the open ocean at a low tide.

Doing exactly that this past fall, I waded under a popular pier and began exploring the artificial structures beneath it.

On one sunken hunk of metal, rust and aquatic vegetation combined to make an impressive pseudo-reef loaded with life, including this Snubnose Sculpin.

This is the first one ever caught on hook-and-line and was my 30th sculpin species.

Its coloration is fairly unique among sculpins, and the vivid 14K gold spot on the edge of the gill plate is my fave feature.
