Fall fishing tips from Bobby Sherman

Meet Bobby Sherman, or more commonly known on Fishbrain as BS-Fishing. One of the early members on the platform, when Fishbrain was the place for only 680,000 anglers, a much smaller community than the 12 million we have today. So it’s fair to say Bobby knows a thing or two about how far we’ve come as well as a few tips to share when it comes to wetting some lines.

What tips do you have for bass anglers heading into fall?

Bass fishing in fall is probably the best time of the year to catch numbers and giants. My favorite season for sure. Fish are feeding for the cold season ahead. The water temps in a lot of areas are in the 70s to low 80s. This is a great topwater time.

I love the hollow body frog at this time of the year. One thing I recommend is to keep 2 different size hollow body frogs, a large and a small. Also make sure to have light color bellies and dark bellies.

Start with a large frog using a long heavy rod action on a 40/50 pound braid. Cloudy days dark bellies tend to work better and on sunny days try the light color belly. If they are not hitting the larger frog go to the smaller frog. It can sometimes be a game-changer.

The swimbait is great all year round bait, thrown on fluorocarbon. Try swimming it or slow dragging on the bottom. I love it weightless in shallow water and deeper water over 4 foot on a weighted swimbait hook.

The jerk bait can also be productive during fall too. Fluorocarbon is my line for it. The weight of the line can help get the jerk deeper or shallower too. Light-weighted lines will get the jerk bait deeper in the water column and heavier weighted line shallower. As far as color preferences go, I like to match the bait I am throwing with the vegetation for the area. A lot of time the baitfish can or will match the vegetation throughout the year so I like to stick to this theory.

How did you get into fishing?

I started fishing when I was very young.  All I can remember is being on the rivers in Alabama with my dad running lines for catfish and popping corks in the colder months for Crappie on the Lakes.  Then my Granddad taught me as I grew up through my School years.

How did you learn about Fishbrain?

I’ve been on Fishbrain for around 6 years. My first post was in June 2015 and I discovered the app while searching for a fishing app on the app store. I’d been looking for an app to help me in my fishing and Fishbrain was exactly that.

What features on Fishbrain do you use the most, and why?

I like the map a lot. It helps me keep up with my local fishing waters, whether it’s for salt or freshwater fishing.

My favorite part is the statistics page. I log pretty much all my catches and it’s great to be able to look back on everything I’ve caught and dig into the numbers a bit more.

What tips do you have for other anglers that might be just starting out?

First I’d recommend they find someone to go with someone who is already experienced. If you don’t know anyone watch videos on the species you are after.

Join Fishbrain or a fishing group. Fishbrain has a lot of awesome anglers that will more than gladly share ideas and tips.

If you are on your own. Keep it simple:

  • Use live bait and target bluegill.

  • Try swimbaits on a clear line.

  • For saltwater fishing try live shrimp or minnows.

As you progress you can start to get into more advanced lures and techniques. You don’t need the most expensive gear to see if this is a sport you will enjoy. Start modest. At the end of the day, it’s about having fun. And the best way to have fun is to catch, even if it’s small species like bluegill. It’s better than standing out all day getting nothing.

If you haven't experienced the #1 fishing app worldwide, make sure and check out Fishbrain to see all the fish data, fishing spots, weather conditions you've been missing out on plus much more.
