Another fish memory from the archives, once again from 2015. The Lake Ontario tributaries in Upstate New York have been among my favourite destinations for spring steelhead. Steelhead were a challenging fish for me as I began targeting them while learning how to fly fish at the same time. Initially there were many missed fish and some broken-hearted moments which made it even more rewarding when I successfully landed my first steelhead! (I'll share a pic in a future post!) After getting well acquainted with the fly rod over the years, I then spent some time learning how to fish with a centerpin set-up. Both fly and centerpin have their strengths and I'm thankful I've taken the time to learn both.
Here in Ontario with our government asking us to avoid all non-essential travel, perhaps it's a good time to dust off your fly rod, centerpin (or any rod for that matter) and do some casting practice at home or in your backyard if you're able. This time at home is a great opportunity to fine-tune our craft, check out some videos, read some articles, organize tackle, and be even better prepared when we're able to get back out on the water.
