The Checkered Puffer is one of many species of puffer fish, named for their ability to swell by swallowing water or air as a defense mechanism. Checkered puffer are typically pale tan to yellow in color, with a polygonal or square pattern of lines much like a giraffe. Commonly found in tidal creeks, bays and protected coastal waters. Also in brackish water. Highly toxic.
