Snook fishing is one of the most popular saltwater fish for anglers to pursue. They can be very large, are resistant to salinity so they can be found in inshore brackish waters, and at the end of the day closely resembles fishing for freshwater largemouth bass.Your rod for snook fishing should be in the 7-foot medium heavy range with a fast action. Snook tackle is typically lighter lures or live baits fished on 20 pounds braided line with an equally as heavy fluorocarbon leader. While monofilament will work, it may be prone to snapping once the fish decides to make a run for cover. Pair these lines with a medium sized 3000 reel and you’ll be good to go. Snook predominantly hang out around structure and cover like docks, piers, oyster bars, bridges, and seawalls, so be sure to have line and possibly a leader that will be resistant to abrasion and check it often. Spinning gear is typically the main choice for anglers due to its simplicity and versatility, however in experienced hands, a baitcasting set up can be highly effective as it is with bass. On the end of your line, snook tackle closely resembles tackle used for freshwater largemouth. Sub surface plugs or hard baits known as crankbaits or jerk baits to freshwater anglers, are extremely effective in bringing in snook and the options are endless. Just be sure you have a small variety in their swimming depth and try to match them to the common baitfish in the area. Make long casts with light lures near those structured spots and be ready for one of the best fights you can experience. &nbsp;Like bass fishing, topwater hard baits can be an exciting way to entice a strike. Walk the dog with top water plugs or twitch poppers focused on and near structure for an unbelievable top water blow up. Drop in soft plastic curly tail grubs on the back of heavier jig heads if the snook are sitting low. &nbsp;Spoons, spinners and a wide variety of crank baits are all highly effective in hooking into the fish. If live bait is your preferred method grab some circle hooks that correlate to the size of your shrimp or baitfish of choice and the snook will typically hook themselves. As always, a net and a pair of pliers are always recommended for an effective and safe unhooking.
