Rodtoberfest: What some of our favorite fishing rods would be as beer

Oktoberfest is one of the largest and well known celebrations in the world. It’s a time of traditional outfits, history and of course beer. Sadly the event was canceled in 2020 and 2021. In honor of the event, however, we at Fishbrain wanted to honor the event in one of the best ways we know how; through fishing gear.

Follow along as we take some of your favorite fishing rods and compare them to the beer that matches them the best. Oktoberfest may be canceled, but Rodtoberfest is just warming up.

The Rod: Defender Ice Fishing Rod

The Beer: Budweiser Flag Can

They’re both patriotic, economical and people love both for a weekend in winter. The rod and the beer and both state that fishing is America’s real national pastime and it doesn’t need to be the 4th of July to wave the red, white and blue around.

They’re both designed and thrive when cold and both will get a sideways look when used warm. Neither the can, or the rod are gonna break the bank and they don’t have to because this is about quality, not quantity.

If either of these choices are left off the ice fishing packing list, you’re probably having a bad day on the hard water. It's not even clear if you can catch a fish without either one.

The Rod: Toadfish Outfitters Casting Rod

The Beer: Corona

These two were made in a warm climate and for sunny days, but soon people all over started to embrace them.

Both your Toadfish rod and Corona go great on a saltwater day, but you find yourself enjoying both of them more and more on the bass pond, the river and just about anywhere else. Bottle, can, spinning rod, or casting rod, they all seem to just fit in your hand nicely and casting one is as smooth as drinking the other.

Along with style and substance, your Toadfish and Corona are also helping out your interests. Every Toadfish product sold helps contribute to the essential restoration of oyster beds, while Corona contributed over one million dollars to help the restaurant industry which was affected during the pandemic.

The Rod: Arundel Tackle WILD SIDE 6’1” Light Spinning Rod

The Beer: Microbrew Craft Porter

These two are all about quality. The price point doesn’t matter because you know you are getting what you paid for. When you buy one of these you are looking for the finest. An expert can enjoy one of these two just as much as the amateur, but the expert is going to appreciate every single high quality detail. Both your porter and your WILD SIDE are fine in the summer, but you really get the most out of them as soon as the weather cools off.

Fall is your favorite time of year for both and you would argue until you were blue in the face that the cool temps actually accentuate the boldness and smoothness each has to offer.

The Rod: Millerods CastFreak

The Beer: Fosters

Both come from the land where fishing is just about as popular as beer. The Millerods Cast Freak was developed by intense research and development in Australia. Both the can and the rod have an incredibly iconic look to them and once you experience them you will know what the big deal is. Light and refreshing yet responsive and durable make for a perfect accessory to any day on the water.

Whether it's a Murray cod in the outback, or a PR bass on your favorite stretch of lake, your forsters and your CastFreak are going to improve your day on the water. You may start wondering how you ever fished without each of them in the past.

The Rod: St. Croix Mojo Bass Spinning Rod

The Beer: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

You may have never had either one, but they are both so iconic they are known around the world. Through quality and innovation, both of these juggernauts have become mainstays in tackle shops and cold sections in grocery stores across the country.

Your pale ale has competed fiercely with the largest name brands in the beer industry. With some of the best ingredients and brewing methods the company has now grown to the third largest microbrewery in the USA.

St. Croix have been producing fishing rods for over 70 years and are still making their rods in the U.S.  Since making the first multi section bamboo rod in 1948 the company now makes a rod for every type of angler and deserves to be mentioned with other top names like Fenwick, and Shimano.

If it's crappie fishing, a ball game, or saltwater fly fishing, or a black tie event, either of these choices are an acceptable go to.
