The Mutton Snapper Project

The mutton snapper project is an ongoing citizen science effort that seeks to build our understanding of mutton snapper biology and ecology through the knowledge of anglers. This is part of a larger project studying undersized mutton snapper utilization of coastal habitats. We are seeking to understand not only how these fish spend their time coastally but also when they move into their offshore habitats. We invite you to complete our survey and participate in improving our understanding of this species. The mutton snapper typically has an olive-green back that fades to a white belly. Although its coloration can vary extensively, it can be distinguished from other snapper species by a dark spot on its flank above its lateral line and a pointed anal fin. When they are young, they are found in less than 88 feet of water, but they undergo a habitat shift to deeper waters as they age.
