Jamaica Pond is known for it’s Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout population (as stocked by Masswildlife) it is also home to a variety of freshwater fish species. This includes Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Yellow Perch, Blue Gill, and Pumpkinseed Sunfish. Broodstock Salmon are also stocked when available. 

Being a glacially formed “kettle hole” pond, it is quite deep for it’s 68 acre size, averaging 25ft with a 53ft deepest hole. Pretty outstanding for a city pond! 

It can get crowded as it is in Boston, with a heavily used paved walking path all the way around. (I prefer more secluded spots personally.) Still giving Jamaica Pond 5 stars because you couldn’t ask for better freshwater fishing just 2 1/2 miles from Fenway Park.

Boston’s Top Fishing Pond

Access: 

North and south sides of the pond provide the best fishing access, with the northwest side also providing free street parking. It is 1.5 miles around, so possible to fish the perimeter thoroughly in a few hours. Early morning before the pond gets crowded is the best time to go. Late nights are good too, although technically the park is closed after 11. Boats can be rented during the day, but no private boat access.

Fishing:

I mostly catch large mouth bass and perch here. The pond is stocked with rainbow trout once or twice a year, but after the initial rush, they are not easy pickings at all! It is very weedy in the summer, so if casting, I recommend spinnerbaits or other weed resistant lures. I see folks having success catching rainbow trout with bait throughout the year, but I haven’t been so lucky. :)

My favorite urban fishing hole

Nice spot but too many people keep largemouth bass... hate seeing it when there are tons of stockie trout for the powerbait crowd. Also, a lot of annoying people asking “are there fish in there?” or “do you eat them?” A lot of unsolicited conversation that fisherfolk can do without.
